My recommendation for the future: ZB Block
Since I installed it on my forum registration and login attempts went down from >250/day to 20/day. Bad bots “learned” to avoid my site. 
Thank you Helmut for the suggestion, I got the first notfication and inactivated the user straight away but as you see the bot hit almost every post. I will clean them up but first I want to try and prevent it happening again.
Apologies to everyone about this; I’m not sure exactly why this has just happened as we managed to prevent bad registrations the last few years.
