question about processors

I posted this question to a workstation vendor:
"I currently run an old (2015) Dell precisio 7810 with 2 xeon E5-2630 v3@2.4GHz processors and 8 cores,32 g of ram. do I have to go to amd ryzen threadripper to see any faster performance? or would the x-series give me noticeable improvement?

I would suggest you talk to the devs who make the software first Then come back and talk to us if they say the program is GPU dependent, CPU, is it single threaded/ single core heavy or does it spread through many cores the work load?

Is the program is GPU dependent ? No, NLME does not use GPU

CPU ? Yes, NLME is highly CPU dependent

is it single threaded/ single core heavy ? yes – if MPI parallelization is not used for the current job

By nature NLME depends on CPU frequency and CPU cache for such situations

does it spread through many cores the work load? Yes – if MPI parallelization is used

or

R assisted run is used with NLME8 package distributed within PHX8.3 for run modes which could be parallelized (bootsrap, covSearch)

Number of cores available is significant factor for parallelized jobs.
